As a Man Thinketh

THE aphorism, "As a man thinketh in his heart so is he," not only embraces the whole of a man's being, but is so comprehensive as to reach out to every condition and circumstance of his life.

"사람이 마음으로 생각하는 대로 그 사람이 된다"는 격언은 사람의 존재 전체를 포괄할 뿐 아니라 삶의 모든 조건과 상황에까지 미칠 정도로 포괄적입니다.

A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.

사람은 문자 그대로 생각하는 대로입니다. 그의 인격은 그의 모든 생각의 총합입니다.

As the plant springs from, and could not be without, the seed, so every act of a man springs from the hidden seeds of thought, and could not have appeared without them.

식물이 씨앗에서 싹이 트고 씨앗 없이는 존재할 수 없듯이, 사람의 모든 행위는 생각이라는 숨겨진 씨앗에서 비롯되며 그것들이 없었다면 나타날 수 없었을 것이다.

This applies equally to those acts called "spontaneous" and "unpremeditated" as to those, which are deliberately executed.

이는 의도적으로 행해진 행위뿐 아니라 "자발적"이고 "계획되지 않은" 행위에도 똑같이 적용됩니다.

Act is the blossom of thought, and joy and suffering are its fruits; thus does a man garner in the sweet and bitter fruitage of his own husbandry.

행위는 생각의 꽃이며, 기쁨과 고통은 그 열매입니다. 이와 같이 사람은 자기 농사의 달콤하고 쓴 열매를 거둡니다.

"Thought in the mind hath made us, What we are By thought was wrought and built.

“생각이 마음을 만들었으니, 우리의 현재 모습은 생각으로 만들어지고 세워졌느니라.”

If a man's mind Hath evil thoughts, pain comes on him as comes The wheel the ox behind....

만일 사람의 마음에 악한 생각이 있으면, 그에게 고통이 닥쳐오는데, 마치 소가 끄는 수레바퀴가 따라오는 것과 같으니라...

..If one endure In purity of thought, joy follows him As his own shadow--sure."

…순수한 생각으로 인내하면 기쁨이 그의 그림자처럼 따라온다. 확실하다.
