A Farewell to Arms

In the late summer of that year we lived in a house in a village that looked across the river and the plain to the mountains.

그해 늦여름에 우리는 강과 평야를 건너 산이 보이는 마을의 한 집에 살았습니다.

In the bed of the river there were pebbles and boulders, dry and white in the sun, and the water was clear and swiftly moving and blue in the channels.

강바닥에는 자갈과 바위가 있었는데, 햇볕에 말라 하얗게 빛났고, 물은 맑고 빠르게 흐르며 물길은 푸르렀다.

Troops went by the house and down the road and the dust they raised powdered the leaves of the trees.

군대가 집을 지나 길을 따라 내려가니 그들이 일으킨 먼지가 나무 잎사귀를 가루로 만들었다.

The trunks of the trees too were dusty and the leaves fell early that year and we saw the troops marching along the road and the dust rising and leaves, stirred by the breeze, falling and the soldiers marching and afterward the road bare and white except for the leaves.

나무줄기에도 먼지가 쌓여 있었고 그해에는 잎이 일찍 떨어졌으며 우리는 군대가 길을 따라 행군하는 것을 보았고 먼지가 날리고 바람에 잎이 떨어지고 군인들이 행군하는 것을 보았으며 그 후에는 길에 잎 외에는 아무것도 없고 하얗게 변해 있었습니다.

The plain was rich with crops; there were many orchards of fruit trees and beyond the plain the mountains were brown and bare.

평야는 곡식이 풍성했고 과일나무 과수원이 많았으며 평야 너머 산들은 갈색이고 황량했습니다.

There was fighting in the mountains and at night we could see the flashes from the artillery.

산에서 전투가 벌어졌고 밤에는 포격의 섬광이 보였습니다.

In the dark it was like summer lightning, but the nights were cool and there was not the feeling of a storm coming.

어둠 속에서 그것은 여름 번개 같았지만 밤은 시원했고 폭풍이 올 것 같은 느낌은 없었습니다.

Sometimes in the dark we heard the troops marching under the window and guns going past pulled by motor-tractors.

때때로 어둠 속에서 우리는 창문 아래로 행진하는 군대의 소리와 모터트랙터가 끄는 총이 지나가는 소리를 들었습니다.
