The Teacher

This book 1s intended to detail, in a familiar and practical manner, asystem of arrangements for the organization and management of a school, based on the employment, so far as is practicable, of Moral Influences, as a means of effecting the objects in view.

이 책은 가능한 한 도덕적 영향력을 활용하여 목표를 달성하는 것을 기반으로 하는 학교 조직 및 관리 체계를 친숙하고 실용적인 방식으로 상세히 설명하고자 합니다.

Its design is, not to bring forward new theories or new plans, but to develop and explain, and to carry out to their practical applications such principles as, among all skillful and experienced teachers, are generally admitted and acted upon.

그 목적은 새로운 이론이나 새로운 계획을 제시하는 것이 아니라, 모든 숙련되고 경험 많은 교사들 사이에서 일반적으로 인정되고 실천되는 원칙들을 개발하고 설명하며 실제 적용하는 것입니다.

Of course it is not designed for the skillful and experienced themselves, but it is intended to embody what they already know, and to present it in a practical form for the use of those who are beginning the work, and who wish to avail themselves of the experience which others have acquired.

물론 이것은 숙련되고 경험이 풍부한 사람들을 위해 고안된 것이 아니라, 그들이 이미 알고 있는 것을 구체화하고, 일을 시작하는 사람들이나 다른 사람들이 얻은 경험을 활용하고자 하는 사람들이 사용할 수 있도록 실용적인 형태로 제시하기 위한 것입니다.

Although moral influences are the chief foundations on which the power of the teacher over the minds and hearts of his pupils is, according to this treatise, to rest, still it must not be imagined that the system here recommended is one of persuasion.

이 논문에 따르면 교사가 제자의 마음과 정신에 미치는 영향력은 도덕적 영향에 기초하고 있지만, 여기서 권장하는 체계가 설득에 의한 것이라고 생각해서는 안 됩니다.

It is a system of authority--supreme and unlimited authority--a point essential in all plans for the supervision of the young; but it is authority secured and maintained as far as possible by moral measures.

그것은 권위의 체계, 즉 최고이자 무제한적인 권위이며, 젊은이들을 감독하기 위한 모든 계획에서 필수적인 요소입니다. 그러나 그것은 가능한 한 도덕적 조치를 통해 확보되고 유지되는 권위입니다.

There will be no dispute about the propriety of making the most of this class of means.

Whatever difference of opinion there may be on the question whether physical force is necessary at all, every one will agree that, if ever employed, it must be only as a last resort, and that no teacher ought to make war upon the body, unless it is proved that he can not conquer through the medium of the mind.

물리적 힘이 필요한지에 대한 의견 차이가 있을지라도, 만약 사용된다면 최후의 수단으로만 사용되어야 하며, 교사는 정신적인 방법으로 극복할 수 없다는 것이 증명되지 않는 한 신체에 대한 공격을 해서는 안 된다는 점에는 모두 동의할 것입니다.

In regard to the anecdotes and narratives which are very freely introduced to illustrate principles in this work, the writer ought to state that, though they are all substantially true--that is, all except those which are expressly introduced as mere suppositions, he has not hesitated to alter very freely, for obvious reasons, the unimportant circumstances connected with them.

이 책에서 원리를 설명하기 위해 자유롭게 소개된 일화와 이야기에 관하여 저자는 비록 그것들이 모두 실질적으로 사실이지만(즉, 단순히 추측으로 명시적으로 소개된 것들을 제외하고) 명백한 이유로 그것들과 관련된 중요하지 않은 상황을 매우 자유롭게 변경하는 것을 주저하지 않았다는 점을 밝혀야 합니다.
