The fire-eater laughed again, and blew a flame at Makóma.

불을 먹는 자가 다시 웃으며 마코마에게 불을 뿜었다.

But the hero sprang behind a rock--just in time, for the ground upon which he had been standing was turned to molten glass, like an overbaked pot, by the heat of the flame-spirit's breath.

그러나 영웅은 바위 뒤로 뛰어들었다. 바로 그때 그가 서 있던 땅이 불꽃 정령의 숨결의 열기 때문에 마치 너무 구워진 냄비처럼 녹은 유리로 변해 버렸기 때문이다.

Then the hero flung his iron hammer at Chi-ídea-móto, and, striking him, it knocked him helpless; so Makóma placed him in the sack, Woro-nówu, with the other great men that he had overcome.

그러자 영웅은 치이데아모토에게 쇠망치를 던졌고, 망치에 맞은 치이데아모토는 무력해졌습니다. 그래서 마코마는 그를 자신이 정복한 다른 위대한 사람들과 함께 자루, 워로노우에 넣었습니다.

And now, truly, Makóma was a very great hero; for he had the strength to make hills, the industry to lead rivers over dry wastes, foresight and wisdom in planting trees, and the power of producing fire when he wished.

이제 마코마는 참으로 위대한 영웅이었습니다. 그는 언덕을 만들 힘이 있었고, 마른 황무지 위로 강물을 흐르게 할 근면함이 있었으며, 나무를 심는 데 필요한 선견지명과 지혜가 있었고, 원할 때 불을 피울 수 있는 능력이 있었습니다.

Wandering on he arrived one day at a great plain, well watered and full of game; and in the very middle of it, close to a large river, was a grassy spot, very pleasant to make a home upon.

그는 계속 방황하다가 어느 날 물이 풍부하고 사냥감이 많은 넓은 평원에 이르렀는데, 그 평원 한가운데 큰 강가 가까이에 집을 짓기에 아주 좋은 풀밭이 있었다.

Makóma was so delighted with the little meadow that he sat down under a large tree, and removing the sack from his shoulder, took out all the giants and set them before him.

마코마는 그 작은 초원이 너무 마음에 들어서 큰 나무 아래에 앉아 어깨에서 자루를 내려놓고 모든 거인들을 꺼내어 자기 앞에 세웠습니다.

'My friends,' said he, 'I have travelled far and am weary.

'친구들아,' 그가 말했다. '나는 먼 길을 여행하여 지쳤다.'

Is not this such a place as would suit a hero for his home?
