“Your gardeners do not understand their business: but what can you expect of men whose fathers were cobblers and carpenters?

“너희 정원사들은 자기 일을 이해하지 못한다. 그러나 구두 수선공과 목수였던 조상을 둔 사람들에게 무엇을 기대하겠느냐?”

How should they have learned to cultivate your garden?”

그들이 어찌 당신의 정원을 가꾸는 법을 배웠겠습니까?

“You are quite right,” cried the King.

“네 말이 बिल्कुल सही है। 왕이 외쳤다.

“Therefore,” continued the old man, “you should send for a gardener whose father and grandfather have been gardeners before him, and very soon your garden will be full of green grass and gay flowers, and you will enjoy its delicious fruit.”

“그러므로,” 노인이 계속해서 말했습니다. “아버지와 할아버지가 모두 정원사였던 정원사를 불러오십시오. 그러면 곧 당신의 정원은 푸른 잔디와 아름다운 꽃들로 가득 차게 될 것이고, 당신은 그 맛있는 열매를 즐길 수 있을 것입니다.”

So the King sent messengers to every town, village, and hamlet in his dominions, to look for a gardener whose forefathers had been gardeners also, and after forty days one was found.

그리하여 왕은 자기 영토 내 모든 성읍과 마을과 촌락에 사신을 보내어 조상 대대로 정원사였던 사람을 찾게 하였더니 사십 일 후에 한 사람이 발견되었다.

“Come with us and be gardener to the King,” they said to him.

“우리와 함께 가서 왕의 정원사가 되십시오.” 그들이 그에게 말했습니다.

“How can I go to the King,” said the gardener, “a poor wretch like me?”

“나 같은 보잘것없는 자가 어찌 왕께 나아갈 수 있겠습니까?” 정원사가 말했다.

“That is of no consequence,” they answered.

“그건 아무 상관이 없습니다.” 그들이 대답했습니다.
