About the book
In the summer of 1922, Nick Carraway moves to Long Island and becomes the neighbor of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby, whose lavish parties hide a single purpose: to win back Daisy Buchanan. What Nick sees of that dream, and of the people around it, becomes a sharp portrait of the Jazz Age.
Published in 1925, it is short, lyrical and one of the most read American novels, which makes it an approachable classic to read in English with a translation beside it.
The opening line
“In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.”
