But the lords and gentlemen-at-arms cried out that every man had a right to try to win the sword, and they decided that on New Year's Day a tournament should be held, and any Knight who would, might enter the lists.

그러나 귀족들과 기사들은 모든 사람이 칼을 따낼 권리가 있다고 외쳤고, 새해 첫날에 토너먼트를 열어 원하는 기사는 누구나 참가할 수 있도록 하자고 결정했습니다.

So on New Year's Day, the Knights, as their custom was, went to hear service in the Great Church, and after it was over they met in the field to make ready for the tourney.

그래서 새해 첫날, 기사들은 그들의 관습대로 대성당에 가서 예배를 드리고, 예배가 끝난 후 들판에 모여 마상 시합을 준비했습니다.

Among them was a brave Knight called Sir Ector, who brought with him Sir Kay, his son, and Arthur, Kay's foster-brother.

Now Kay had unbuckled his sword the evening before, and in his haste to be at the tourney had forgotten to put it on again, and he begged Arthur to ride back and fetch it for him.

But when Arthur reached the house the door was locked, for the women had gone out to see the tourney, and though Arthur tried his best to get in he could not.

Then he rode away in great anger, and said to himself, 'Kay shall not be without a sword this day.

그러자 그는 몹시 화를 내며 말을 타고 떠나가면서 속으로 ‘오늘은 칼 없이 지내지 않겠다’고 생각했다.

I will take that sword in the churchyard, and give it to him'; and he galloped fast till he reached the gate of the churchyard.

내가 그 칼을 묘지에서 가져다가 그에게 주겠다.' 그리고 그는 말을 타고 빠르게 달려 묘지 문에 이르렀다.
