Jonas on a Farm in Winter

Early one winter morning, while Jonas was living upon the farm, in the employment of Oliver's father, he came groping down, just before daylight, into the great room.

어느 겨울 아침 일찍, 요나스는 올리버의 아버지 밑에서 일하며 농장에 살고 있었는데, 동트기 직전에 더듬거리며 큰 방으로 내려왔습니다.

The great room was, as its name indicated, quite large, occupying a considerable portion of the lower floor of the farmer's house.

큰 방은 이름에서 알 수 있듯이 상당히 컸으며, 농부의 집 아래층의 상당 부분을 차지했습니다.

There was a very spacious fireplace in one side, with a settle, which was a long seat, with a very high back, near it.

한쪽에는 매우 넓은 벽난로가 있었고, 그 옆에는 등받이가 매우 높은 긴 의자가 있었다.

The room was used both for kitchen and parlor, and there was a great variety of furniture in different parts of it.

그 방은 부엌과 응접실로 모두 사용되었으며, 그 안의 여러 곳에 다양한 가구가 놓여 있었습니다.

There were chairs and tables, a bookcase with a desk below, a loom in one corner by a window, and a spinning-wheel near it.

의자와 탁자, 책상이 있는 책장, 창가 한쪽 구석에는 베틀, 그 근처에는 물레가 있었다.

Then, there were a great many doors.

그때에 문이 아주 많았습니다.

One led out into the back yard, one up stairs, one into a back room,--which was used for coarse work, and which was generally called the kitchen,--and one into a large store closet adjoining the great room.

하나는 뒷마당으로, 하나는 위층으로, 하나는 뒷방으로 통하는데, 이 방은 거친 일을 하는 데 사용되었고 일반적으로 부엌이라고 불렸습니다. 그리고 하나는 큰 방에 인접한 큰 창고로 통했습니다.

Jonas groped his way down stairs; but as soon as he opened the great room door, he found the room filled with a flickering light, which came from the fireplace.

요나는 더듬거리며 계단을 내려갔습니다. 그러나 그가 큰 방 문을 열자마자 벽난로에서 나오는 희미한 불빛이 방 안을 가득 채우고 있는 것을 보았습니다.
