About the book
Jane Eyre is the story of an orphan who grows up unloved in her aunt's house, survives a harsh charity school, and becomes a governess at Thornfield Hall. There she meets its brooding master, Mr. Rochester, and a house full of secrets, and has to decide what she owes to love and what she owes to herself.
First published in 1847, it is told in Jane's own strong, direct voice, which makes it a vivid classic to read in English alongside a translation.
