About the book

Told through letters and nested narratives, Frankenstein is the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a living being and then abandons it in horror. The creature's search for belonging, and Victor's attempts to escape what he has made, raise questions about responsibility that still feel current.

First published in 1818, it is often called the first science-fiction novel, and its rich, formal sentences make it a good book to read slowly beside a translation.

The opening line

“You will rejoice to hear that no disaster has accompanied the commencement of an enterprise which you have regarded with such evil forebodings.” Letter 1 · Mary Shelley, Frankenstein
