Adventures of a Young Naturalist

The evening before leaving for one of my periodical excursions, I was putting in order my guns, my insect-cases, and all my travelling necessaries, when my eldest son, a lad nine years old, came running to me in that wheedling manner--using that irresistible diplomacy of childhood which imposes on fathers and mothers so many troublesome treaties, and which children so well know how to assume when they desire to obtain a favor.

정기 여행을 떠나기 전날 저녁, 나는 총과 곤충 채집통, 그리고 여행에 필요한 모든 물품을 정리하고 있었는데, 그때 아홉 살 된 큰아들이 그 특유의 애교 섞인 말투로 내게 달려왔습니다. 그 아이는 부모에게 온갖 귀찮은 약속을 하게 만드는, 거부할 수 없는 아이들의 외교술을 사용했고, 아이들은 호의를 얻고 싶을 때 그 방법을 아주 잘 알고 있었습니다.

"Are you going to make as long a journey as you did last month?" he asked.

“지난달처럼 긴 여행을 하실 건가요?” 그가 물었다.

"Longer, I think; for, as we are so soon leaving for Europe, I want to complete my collection as rapidly as possible.

"더 오래 걸릴 것 같습니다. 곧 유럽으로 떠나야 하므로 가능한 한 빨리 수집을 완료하고 싶습니다."

I know you will be a good boy during my absence, and obedient to your mother.

내가 없는 동안 네가 착한 아이가 되어 어머니 말씀에 순종할 것을 나는 안다.

You will think of me sometimes, will you not?"

당신은 가끔 저를 생각하시겠죠?

"I should much prefer not to think of you," he responded.

“나는 당신에 대해 생각하지 않는 것이 훨씬 더 좋겠습니다.”라고 그가 대답했습니다.

"You would rather, then, that I staid at Orizava?"

"그렇다면 당신은 내가 오리자바에 머물기를 더 원하십니까?"

"Oh no; I should like you to go, and--to go with you."

"아니요, 저는 당신이 가시길 바라며, 당신과 함께 가고 싶습니다."
